Introducing Fusion Sports Massage

Let Us Observe:

Before a session, I observe how a client walks, I note that many walk with a heavy step, bodies moving quite stiffly. That indicates a very tired person with toxins and lactic acid in the muscles, which cause muscle tension and soreness. After my session, they look refreshed. How can I tell? The face is more relaxed and smiling, the eyes are brighter, the walk is more natural and lighter, the arms and legs are moving faster. This means the blood is flowing well through the body and with more oxygen pumped into the organs, the body will naturally feel good and fresh.

What is My Style? Holistic.

For those who are not a big fan of pain, you will prefer my style as it incorporates the relaxation techniques in Swedish, Javanese and acupressure. It is the most gentle and relaxing sports massage that you will ever find. It will be therapeutic as I am trained and very thorough. I will not stop working on the knots and problem areas, until they have improved as much as possible. Post-session, a common remark from my clients: "Gentle, yet firm and strong".

Customer Profile:

People see me for various reasons as they hope I can help. Some are so tired - e.g. after pushing themselves at work, after a big sports event, or after reservist training. Some feel pain and seek relief  - they have injuries - e.g. sprains, repetitive sprain injuries, or had hurt their muscles in one way or another. But another type of customer is very normal, does not play sports, have no injuries, but simply wants to relax.

I serve both men and women, young and old. For couples and families, I bring along my colleague, Karen, whom I have trained personally and who is talented in her own right.

My Training Background

To get to where I am today, I had studied under many excellent teachers, both local and foreign. My first and best instructor was an Australian, Mr Geoffrey Sweeney. I owe a lot to this 'sifu' as I learnt from him the philosophy of the new sports massage. All good therapists know --- the deeper the pressure, the more therapeutic it is. In other words, deep pressure is good! However, the reality is... any person who is extremely sensitive will feel more pain if deep pressure is applied to his or her already sore muscle. Mr Sweeney taught me how to minimise pain so that treatment is not painful. That is why my Sports massage is unlike any other Sports massage or hard massage. I have taken the best relaxation techniques from Swedish, Javanese, Chinese acupressure, yoga stretching, to create a new fusion style of Sports Massage. I would patent this style if I could :)


One learning point was: Do NOT press hard with all your strength and all your might on every muscle for every client. This mistake is made by many therapists. They may do it with good intentions but it will harm the client more than it helps him or her. It will only make people run away! Only the masochistic, those who enjoy pain, or those with an extremely high pain threshold, will love the massage therapist who 'whacks' the client. It is more important to make the client comfortable and treat the problem without causing mental stress and agony to this client.  Remember:  In Sports massage, the professional Sports massage therapist will treat the problem areas, not just give a massage. It must be therapeutic, otherwise it is not a genuine Sports massage.

What Happens to Athletes or People Who Run Around? :P

Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) occur whenever people do a particular action for a very long time. I will show two case studies - a maranthon runner and a construction engineer.

A frequent runner utilizes these muscles during a run -- lower back, glutes or butt, hamstrings, quadriceps (front thigh), ITB (muscle at the side of thigh) and calves. If he wishes to continue running without any problems, without cramps or injuries.. he really should do a good warm-up and cool down. And my advice is to get a good massage when the muscles feel tight and uncomfortable. Any good massage, but it is best to get a sports massage as it includes deep tissue treatment that will detox the muscles and promote muscle recovery.

Do not wait until you are limping before seeking a massage. Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) are really not fun to have :P The relevant muscles tend to hurt when you move and you may not have the full range of motion. As a result, those with RSI need more sports massage sessions and physiotherapy to recover fully.

How about the next case, the construction engineer. He is stressed out and uses the computer and phone a lot, causing shoulder and neck tension. He is often on the move, walking around the site all day or climbing up and down stairs. Basically 'running around'. So his legs, butt and lower back, which are connected, may have problems too. To meet tight deadlines, he hardly takes a break and works very long hours for weeks or months. The result of all these activities? An extremely fatigued person with sore shoulders, stiff neck, tight lower body. This person will benefit most from a Sports massage as it promotes lymphatic drainage and treats muscular sprains.

RSI can affect anyone if they do anything day in, day out, almost everyday for ages.

The Funny Thing about Muscles

What's interesting about muscles is that they will become stiff whether you overuse, or underuse them. Whenever you exercise, lactic acid builds up in the muscles. Even when you do not exercise and sit for hours, your muscles stiffen up due to lack of blood circulation.

Solution: Get a massage! Preferably a sports massage as this style is the style that focuses the most attention on muscles. Sports massage is one of the most therapeutic of all massage styles, for it works along the muscle fibres, and includes deep tissue treatment to penetrate tight muscles and loosen them. I may include heat treatment for severe cases. At the end of every sesson, I help the client to stretch his leg muscles and core muscles (the back, abdomen and hips). Clients always seem more energetic and mobile afterwards.

My Clean Treatment Policy

Ethics is important in every profession and it is no less so in this holistic health industry. Every professional therapist should be respected. I am only interested in giving clean genuine therapy and NOT sexual services. A few had argued with me like a lawyer regarding the definition of sexual services, saying that 'other' services are therapeutic too, and since I am a therapist, I should provide 'such' services.

 Sorry, this is illogical. Why? If sexual services is indeed therapy and treatment, then how come physiotherapists and doctors do not provide sexual services at the end of their consultation? If these were indeed acceptable, then wouldn't it be advertised openly everywhere? Everyone will race to provide such 'extra services', right? Hahaha!! Well, the bottom line is..no hanky panky plse. Clean is good.
